The experimental fungicides, imazalil (Fungaflor, Fungazil), CGA-64251 (Vanguard), and prochloraz, related in chemical structure and mode of activity, were compared with benomyl or thiabendazole (benzimidazoles) for control or the major postharvest diseases of Florida citrus fruits. The materials were suspended in water and applied as a non-recovery spray to washed fruit before waxing with water-emulsion or solvent waxes. Prochloraz was the least active of the experimental fungicides against stem-end rot caused by Diplodia natalensis and Phomopsis citri, but none of the fungicides controlled these organisms as consistently as benomyl or TBZ. The test materials were more effective than than benomyl for control or stem-end rot caused by Alternaria citri and as effective as the benzimidazoles for control of green mold caused by Penicillium digitatum. CGA-64251 was the only material that reduced sour rot caused by Geotrichum candidum. |
